  • THE FUTURE OF THE FORUM IN 2023

    Paraphrasing the Bible, the Anglo-American writer, Oliver Herford, once said:

    ‘Many are called, but few get up’

    and I can’t help but think that this saying is most apposite to my attempts to achieve wider involvement by its membership in the funding of this forum.

    The forum is most grateful to the 19 generous members who have, so far, answered the call and who have got up and given. But contrast that to the 34 additional members - selected as those who are the most prolific and regular users of the forum - who have been approached, directly and individually, but have not answered the call. And then contrast those to the 832 other current members who, despite the plea for contributions which has ‘headlined’ the forum front page for months, have maintained the same silence in response to the call.
     
    Put bluntly, only just over 2% of the forum membership has been willing to offer anything to support the running costs and fund the future of the forum. I find it sad that nearly 98% of the members of the forum, many of whom presumably get something out of it, are unwilling to put anything, however great or small, back into it. If you are one of the 98% reading this, perhaps you will reflect upon what you get out of the forum because, even now, it’s not too late to contribute something to the 2023 running costs of the forum.

    Nobody is being asked to make a substantial contribution to the running costs of forum. Indeed, if a much greater number of members each made a small contribution, it is likely that the cost could be met by those. All that is asked is that each member reflects upon what the forum means to them, and what they get out of it, and then make the contribution that they can afford to the cost of running the forum in the present year. There’s no fixed amount and every contribution, be it great or small, is both valuable and valued.

    If you want to make a contribution to the running costs of the forum, but have not yet done so, please send me a PM and I’ll let you have the details to enable you to make a contribution by way of an online bank transfer. If you want any more information about contributing, please do not hesitate to ask me. Otherwise I hope that more than 2% of you will be generous and thereby ensure that the forum that, presumably, you all enjoy, has not only a today but also a tomorrow.
