Sapper George Harrod, 172 Tunnelling Coy.

Sapper George William Harrod, interred at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, died in the Helena Military Hospital, Shorncliffe on 9th April 1941. The War Diary of No.172 Tunnelling Company gives the following details..

4th April 1941.
An accident of a serious nature occurred at the Highcliff workings in which three men were buried by a fall of cliff face, one 4265387 Sgt. Riley, J.G. was dead when extricated.

9th April 1941.
1941605 Spr. Harrod G.W. died.. as a result of injuries sustained on 4th April 1941 at Highcliff Shelter.

Born ¼ June 1916 Islington. Mother’s maiden name Coggins
his parents Henry Harrod/Emily Coggins married ¼ March 1903 Islington.
in 1911 Henry & Emily with 5 children at 59 Kings Edwards Rd, Ponders End, Middlesex. Henry a General Labourer.

Henry’s WW1 Record. Confirms the above . See attached which lists wife & Children(inc Geo William) . No 79419 133rd Labour Corps
At home 7.3.1917-17.3.1917, and BEF 18.3.1917.
There is a copy death cert of a daughter, age 8, April 1918 in Norfolk with her aunt present. (Henry granted leave). He was posted to Shorncliffe 4.3.1919.
See attached his call up paper(I have not seen one of theses before)
(slights off subject about his father, but interesting)
