I have found, so far,  three newspaper articles about Sergeant Noel Gander - transcribed below in date order.  The first two are the same but published eight months apart.  The third got me thinking..... and I would love to know who wrote it - it is a lovely message :

Mid Sussex Times - Wednesday 08 April 1942

"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them".

HURSTPIERPOINT.

Sergeant Noel Thomas Gander.  R.A.F.
Lance Corporal Percy Gander. M.E.F.
Signalman A.J. Webb. Royal Corps of Signals.

Mid Sussex Times - Wednesday 30 December 1942

The first two newspaper articles name "Lance Corporal Percy Gander. M.E.F.".  - whom I can't positively identify.  I'm not sure if Noel Thomas Gander is related to Percy Gander  --   "Percy Gander" is commemorated on both of the Hurstpierpoint War Memorials .  The closest CWGC entry that I can find refers to :

GANDER, PERCY
Rank:Private
Service No:6097139
Date of Death:29/11/1941 Age:26
Regiment/Service:The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) 2nd Bn.
Grave Reference: 8. G. 22. Cemetery:KNIGHTSBRIDGE WAR CEMETERY, ACROMA
Additional Information:Son of Horace and Helen Gander; husband of Ann Gander, of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

In respect of Sergeant Noel Thomas Gander, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 78 Squadron, the following is recorded on the "Aircraft Accidents in Yorkshire" website.

Quote
Whitley Z9389 near North Cowton.

This 78 Squadron aircraft took off from Croft at 18.09hrs on 13th March 1942 to undertake an operational flight to Boulogne. On the return to Croft the pilot was having difficulty in landing the aircraft and on his fifth attempt to land at 00.40hrs on 14th March he approached too fast and overshot the runway. The aircraft ran over the boundary hedge into fields beyond and hit a number of trees, it then caught fire and sadly a number of the crew were sadly killed.

Sergeant Gander is the only crew member buried in our Forum area.  If you click on the above link - the "Aircraft Accidents in Yorkshire" website has kindly listed and detailed the other crew members.

Attached are two photographs of Sergeant Gander's resting place.  He is buried with his father.   The headstone inscription is starting to become hard to read and there is also a big holly bush at the foot of his grave which made photographing a bit difficult.
