TRIALS OF INCENDIARIES AND MACHINE BREAKERS. Trials of persons accused of taking part in the outrages of various kinds in the southern districts are now in progress. At Maidstone, on Friday, sentence of death was passed upon the three young men convicted of setting fire to some ricks, and not the slightest hope of mercy was held out to them by the judge; another was also convicted of setting fire to a barn and outhouse at Bearsted; sentence of transportation for seven years was also adjudged to seven others convicted on the preceding day of breaking threshing machines. On Friday also, eight labourers were convicted of riotously assembling and causing alarm and disturbance, four of whom were sentenced to undergo two years' imprisonment and hard labour, one eighteen months, and one twelve months.
