Eastbourne Gazette - Wednesday 09 June 1943

OPEN VERDICT AT INQUEST. SOLDIER'S DEATH ON COUNTRY ROAD.
An open verdict was returned by the Coroner for East Sussex (Dr E. F. Hoare) when the inquest on Carl Winnberg, a Canadian soldier, was resumed at Eastbourne yesterday (Tuesday).

As reported in the Eastbourne Herald" on Saturday, Carl Winnberg was found seriously injured on the Wartling-road, Pevensey, at midnight on May 26. He died the next day in the Princess Alice Hospital.

After hearing the evidence of two more passengers in the 10-h.p. Hillman saloon car, 2nd Lieut. William Wheeler and 2nd Lieut. Kerry Palmer, of the U.S.A, the Coroner said that the cause of death was multiple injuries so severe that it appeared that a very heavy vehicle must have passed over the body. There was no evidence to show that the 10-h.p. car was the one.

When the people in this car went back to him all the evidence showed that the injuries had been done before. Winnberg was run over by an unknown vehicle and there was no evidence to show that it was manslaughter or anything else.
