BOMB TRAGEDY

Two H.G. Officers Killed In Premature Explosion


An inquest on two Home Guard officers, Sec-Lieut. John Cheney (49), of Carshalton, Surrey, and Lieut. George Henry Davies (37), of Upper Tooting, London, who were fatally injured when a bomb prematurely exploded during exercises in Brockham Lime Pits, Surrey, last Sunday, was adjourned at Dorking until March 5. The military inquiry opens tomorrow. Lieut. Cheney, who had both legs amputated in hospital, died next day. Five other Home Guard officers and a sergeant-major were injured. Four of them are still in hospital with serious injuries.

John Cheney
Born 1893 East Langton, Leics

In 1911 with his parents & brother Ernest, at East Langton Market Harborough. He was a Student Teacher. Father a Domestic Coachman.

Probate. Of 23 Anglesey Court Rd, Carshalton. Died at Dorking & District Hospital, Admin to Kathleen Agnes Cheney, widow & Margaret Kathleen Belfie, (wife of Frank Cyril Belfie) Effects £2552
