Rank:Second Lieutenant
Date of Death:25/02/1918
Regiment/Service:Royal Flying Corps
Grave Reference:B11. I. 47.

Worthing Gazette - Wednesday 06 March 1918

Military Honours.

Military honours were accorded at the funeral, on Saturday, of Lieutenant Arthur Edwin Cartland, of the Royal Flying Corps, who was killed in a flying accident near Newcastle.

The deceased officer was a son of Mrs. F. A. Cartland, of Wentworth House, Western-place, and although only twenty-one years of age, he had seen considerable active service in France, having joined the Flying Corps in July, 1913, or some thirteen months before the outbreak of the War.

He took up his Commission in September last, and was home on leave only three days before his death, in order to see his brother, who is in the Motor Transport Section of the Army Service Corps.

At the funeral on Saturday (the local Military arrangements having been made by Sergeant-Major Renham) the coffin, covered with a Union Jack, was drawn on a gun carriage by a detachment of the Steyne School Cadets; whilst a firing party was supplied from Shoreham, and a Military Band was also in attendance from that Camp.

(Long list of floral tributes, mourners etc skipped)
