Walmer Castle was built by Henry VIII in 1540 to defend the Downs from invasion by France & Spain. Designed as an artillery fortress with a circular keep at it's centre.
Since 1708 it has been the Residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Lord Wardens who have resided here include Pitt the Younger, the 1st Duke of Wellington (who died in his bedroom here in 1852), Sir Winston Churchill & HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Some 1960's colour photographs of the Lord Warden's Flat at Walmer Castle. A bit faded, and the colours are terrible..

That would have been during either Sir Winston Churchill 1941-1965 or Sir Robert Menzies 1966-1978 tenure!

Thanks Longpockets. The pictures are dated 1951-1967, so no help there! Some more pictures showing the guest quarters at the Lord Warden's flat..
