Built to the same design as nearby Fort Moncrieff, Fort Sutherland was constructed at the turn of the 18th Century as a coastal artillery fort. It was situated near to the high water mark between Martello Towers 14 and 15, and probably mounted 32 pdrs instead of the 24 pdrs that English Heritage note. Damaged by the sea in 1869, almost nothing remains of this fort today apart from the north outer wall foundations, but visiting is difficult as the site makes up part of the current Hythe Ranges.
