Extra, 25th March 1988.

THE former Ramsgate fire station fetched more than six times its guide price at auction last week. The building, which adjoins the new fire station in Effingham Street, has been used as a garage for a number of years. Although it has outline planning permission for conversion or site redevelopment, auctioneers were shocked when it realised £92,000 - way above £15,000 guideline. The two-storey building was among 70 lots in the land and property sale organised by Prudential Property Services at the Greenway Hotel, West Malling, which raised £3.25 million. Also included in the sale was a shop with vacant accommodation in Market Place, Margate, which went for £45,000. The three-storey property is in need of some repair and could easily be converted into flats.

Well when you compare the picture that John posted from 1988 and look at the one that I took this morning, you will see just how much the place has changed.....

While reading up on Ramsgate new fire station, I have found out that this site was used from 1938 by the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS).

In 1872 the Fire Engine House was in York Street and the horses used to pull the engine were stabled at Hodgeman’s Yard near the junction of Broad Street and King Street, roughly on the site of the old Odeon Cinema. When a fire was reported by a ‘runner’, the horses were quickly led through the town to harness up.
