During WWII, Reinden Wood was used to site domestic accommodation for the nearby airfield at RAF Hawkinge. All of the wooden buildings have now vanished, leaving only traces of the foundations, but what does still exist are the numerous surface air raid shelters for the site. Made of brick and reinforced concrete, officially all of them are out of bounds to the general public (the land is still used by the MoD for training, and notices warn the public not to stray from the footpath) but as many of these shelters are only a few feet from the track it's a heck of a temptation to have a quick peek.

I'm not sure what this is - could be a shelter?

It seems to be a semi-sunken Stanton shelter. I don't know if they still do, but the museum at Hawkinge used to sell copies of the official plan of RAF Hawkinge, including the Reinden Wood dispersed accommodation site.

Omitted from last: the plan identifies all buildings.

Thank you. A little light bulb illuminated above my head, and I scurried off to look at the plans I had (from 'After the Battle', I  believe). Unfortunately Reinden Wood not shown on them, so I guess the Hawkinge Museum one is different.
