A board on the outside of this house states that it was the former residence of Andrew Borde, Court Physician to Henry VIII, and was once occupied by Edward VI. Ye Olde Mint House is a Grade II Listed building dating from the 16th Century - it's a two storey timber-framed house, refronted with red brick on the ground floor and tile-hung above but retaining the overhang of the first floor. It is, supposedly, the scene of a brutal double murder that took place in 1586 when a 'gentleman' caught his woman in bed with her lover. He had the woman tied to a chair and her tongue cut out so she bled to death, while her lover was roasted alive over an open fire. Possibly considered a bit drastic these days..

Photograph below is from the period 1924-1939.

Although he did own it, there is no record of Andrew Borde (Merry Andrew) ever staying at the Mint House or that it ever was a mint house. Some very creative history to increase visitor numbers perhaps?
