This is a subject dear to my heart. Social history you might say, but difficult to categorise. Cemeteries and general religion did not seem right for something with so much humour so enjoy them with a cuppa!

London Epitaphs.
St Benets.
Here lies one More and no more than he
One More and no more, how can that be?
One More and no more may well lie here alone;
But here lies one More and thats more than one!

St Olaves.
Hallowed be the sabbath
Farewell all worldly wealth
This week begins on Tuesday
For Munday hath hanged himself.

St Johns.
Remember me as you pass by
As you were once, so once was I
As I am now so you must be
So be prepared to follow me.

Added to this inscription was;
To follow thee is my intent
But you left no word which way you went.

Anon.
Here lies Capt. Ernest Bloomfield
Accidentally shot by his orderly
March 2nd 1789.
"Well done though good and faithful servant."

Anon.
To the memory of
John Edwards who
Died in a fire in 1904.
"None could hold a candle to him."

Anon.
Here lies John Higley
Whose Father and Mother
Were drowned in the passage from America.
Had they both lived
They would have been
Buried here!

Now it's your turn.

Rochester   -

Wonderful !

I am reminded of the tale that the late Spike Milligan wanted  I told you I was ill on his tombstone but this was not permitted by the vicar who after a lot of discussion accepted the phrase in Gaelic.

Somewhere there is supposed to be a tombstone to a wife who predeceased her husband & the inscription finishes  With God which is Far Better.

I can't find my photo, but there's a headstone outside Winchester Cathedral that tickled me..

Here sleeps in peace a Hampshire Grenadier,
Who caught his death by drinking cold small Beer,
Soldiers be wise from his untimely fall
And when ye're hot drink Strong or none at all.

This memorial being decay'd was restor'd by the Officers of the Garrison A.D. 1781.

An Honest Soldier never is forgot
Whether he die by Musket or by Pot.

My favorite ones are in Boot Hill Cemetery Tombstone Arizona..

Here lies Lester Moore
Four slugs from a 44
No Les
No More

Here lies George Johnson
Hanged by mistake
1882
He was right
We was wrong
But we strung him up
And now he's gone

Helcion.
Not a wife who predeceased her husband, but in similar vein.

She lived with her husband of 50 years
And died in the confident hope
Of a better life to come.

Suffolk churchyard.
Came in
Walked about
Didn't like it
Walked out.
