St. Catherine's Hill, Winchester
« on: August 21, 2014, 17:21:26 pm »
St. Catherine's Hill, just outside Winchester, is the site of an Iron Age hill fort which is a scheduled ancient monument. I used to visit here quite regularly in my youth, sometimes walking from Southampton along the Itchen Navigation, and cycling at other times. The effort involved was always worth it, simply for the stunning views from the summit. A quick look on Wiki shows there is a much later miz-maze cut in the turf (which I remember well), and the ruins of St. Catherine's Chapel (which, for some reason, I have no memory of whatsoever).

Here's St. Catherine's Hill on an old postcard, not much sign of it being a hill fort from this viewpoint.

First photograph shows St. Catherine's Hill viewed from St. Giles Hill, the other two are from West Hill Cemetery.

A couple of pages, extracted from WORK 14/1463 at the National Archives, regarding excavations in the 1920's. Rather an odd way of spelling the name?

I thought I'd see if I'm still as fit as when I was 14 years old..

Climbed the Hill from the North-West, absolutely knackered when I eventually got to the top. Did a circuit of the ramparts, explored The Clump, wandered round the miz-maze, and had to stop to recover - which involved a sit-down with a cigarette, lots of water, and a mild bout of whimpering to myself. Then set off down the South-West of the hill (thank you, gravity) into the valley, and then, like a total buffoon, I decided to mosey on up to the top of Twyford Down to take this picture.

I discovered I'm not as fit as when I was 14 years old..

Well done for putting the time and effort in John. I'm glad you didn't ask me to come  ;D

Wait until I get a decent drone and then I will show you how to do it sitting at the bottom of the hill.

A panoramic view from the base of the hill.

No, I'll wait until you get a drone capable of lifting me to the top  ;D

Modern steps leading up to the summit can be seen in this shot. It's actually easier to ignore them and to climb straight up - less strain on the old knees!
