Any ideas what the flashes where either side of the Sqd Crest where? I have seen loads of pictures of the Vampires but none close up. I was based at Odiham late 70's before moving to Gutersloh with 230 Sqd.

I think they go back to the 20s and 30s when most RAF squadrons had 'colours' that were painted on their aircraft for identifying, purposes. Some Vampires had these (as did Lightnings, later) either side of the roudle, but not 247 Sqn.

Oddly, I too was on 230 Sqn at Odiham around 1977 to 78! Small world  Smiley
