The Royal Observer Corps was formed in 1925 to provide for the visual detection, identification, tracking and reporting of enemy aircraft over the skies of Great Britain.
In 1955 it was additionaly tasked with the detection and reporting of nuclear explosions and fallout from Soviet attacks on this country.
The No.1 Group ROC HQ bunker was built in Maidstone in 1960 and continued in use until the Corps disbandment in 1995.

Interesting pictures, thanks for sharing them. I'd like to go see this one day, I believe they have open days occasionally?

I don't know how regular John. The bunker is now privately owned by the firm of solicitiors in whose grounds it stands. They use it for storage puposes. This trip was one organised by Maidstone Museum last year for which the solicitors kindly gave permission. May be worth contacting the museum to see if they have any further visits planned.
