Law Society Conference, Brighton, 1961
« on: January 25, 2021, 15:21:48 pm »
Just to demonstrate how, sixty years ago, we lived on a different planet. In that year the Law Society, the solicitors' professional body, held its annual conference in Brighton. Whilst admitting that, then, the number of female solicitors, practising in England and Wales, was nothing like it is today, when they comprise a majority, I wonder how the members of that significant minority felt when they read that the Ladies' programme included '..... a tour around the Royal Pavilion and a talk and demonstration on skin care and make-up'? As L.P. Hartley said, in The Go-Between, 'The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there'.

Ye gods, don't let my wife see that, she hates makeup and never uses it.

It is correct to look at history within the context of the time and more importantly to understand why things were like that and how they improved. Personally I think history should be compulsory in schools but in a revised form that teach lesson learnt from history rather than just basic chronology.
