Also commemorated on this grave is his cousin Edgar Brandon. CWGC list him on the Arras Flying Services Memorial which commemorates almost 1,000 airmen of the Royal Naval Air Service, the Royal Flying Corps, and the Royal Air Force, either by attachment from other arms of the forces of the Commonwealth or by original enlistment, who were killed on the whole Western Front and who have no known grave.

AEROPLANES COLLIDE.

FLIGHT LIEUTENANT KILLED.


An inquest was held at Minster on Saturday, before Mr. Rutley Mowll, on the body of Flight-Lieutenant Arthur Frank Brandon (24), R.N.A.S., stationed at an aerodrome, who was killed through a collision in the air on the previous evening. Mr. R. W. Atkins was foreman of the jury, and the Admiralty was represented by Dr. F. W. Hardman.

Squadron-Commander Charles Henry Butler said deceased was a very experienced pilot, and on Friday afternoon had been acting as instructor in a formation flight of five machines. After tea he went up alone on a short flight to test his engines, using the same machine that he had been flying earlier in the day. It was on this flight that the accident happened.

Replying to the coroner witness said "the rule of the road" in the air was to keep to the right. Supposing one machine was on a higher level, it was the duty of the lower machine to go lower, and the higher if possible to go higher. Witness could not suggest anything by which such accidents could be avoided in future. He did not consider that any of the aerodrome rules had been broken.

Henry Ganderton, employed as a sentry in the R.N.A.S., said he was on duty at the aerodrome facing north at about 5.15 p.m. and saw the accident. He saw an aeroplane on his right flying on the level towards the north, and coming from the north-east was another machine descending towards the aerodrome. This machine bore round in circle, and it appeared to witness that its wheels caught the right hand side of the other from above. The upper machine passed by but the wings of the other suddenly collapsed and it crashed to earth.

Reginald Amos, a farmer, was working in a field near the aerodrome when deceased's machine fell. He had been watching deceased manoeuvring his 'plane, when another machine came down and it seemed to him that the wing of this machine came down on Flight-Lieutenant Brandon's machine. They were not more than five or six hundred feet up. Deceased's machine fell in the field, and witness ran to it and found the aviator entangled in the wreck. He tried to release him but could not do so. Deceased gave one groan but did not speak.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Douglas W. Gray, the pilot of the other machine, said he was the last of a formation flight of five machines in which he had been acting as instructor. The other four had landed, and he had circled round the aerodrome before descending when he noticed a jolt and thought something had been thrown out of his engine and hit his wing. It was only after he had landed that he knew there had been a collision. He had seen the other four machines land and did not realise that there was another machine in the air at all. The broad wings of his machine made it difficult for him to see anything underneath.

P.S. Barty said deceased's injuries included a compound fracture of the skull and of the right thigh, and compound fracture of the right side of the jaw, with various minor injuries.

The Coroner briefly summed up, and said that the only conclusion that could be arrived at on the evidence was that Flight- Lieutenant Brandon met his death by misadventure. He was sure they all deplored the death of the gallant officer, and we should be only too thankful that there were such brave men ready to risk their lives to protect us.

The jury returned a verdict of "Death from misadventure."

Honoured after Death.

The London Gazette announces that the King has approved the award of the D.S.C. to Flight-Lieut. A. F. Brandon, R N.A.S., whose death after a flying accident was reported in our last issue. The award was for services on Aug. 22, 1917, when he attacked single-handed an enemy formation returning from a raid on England and brought one of them down in flames. As his aeroplane had been hit several times, he landed to change machines, and proceeded to attack again with a new one, making repeated attacks on individual machines, and pursuing the enemy formation over the North Sea to the Belgian Coast, where he made a final attack.

His cousin Edgar Thomas Colin Brandon.

Medal Roll Index Card shows he was Private 1274 with 2nd M rifles, and he first served in Africa. In 1914 as awarded 14 Star.  Then joined RFC

His Aviators Cert and pic. Cert shows he was with 10th Royal Sussex Regt in July 1916

There are a couple of photos of F/Lt Brandon's funeral down at St Mary the Virgin Church, Minster on eBay at the moment, even though the listing has him as Australian for some reason.
