Short Mercury (G-ADHJ) / Maia (G-ADHK) Composite
« on: February 07, 2014, 09:09:28 am »
I was capturing some 9.5mm film from the 1930's and came across this which I think you will find of interest.

The book pages came from a member Robin who is an aircraft author and historian.

Also this clip:-

Fantastic images.

And the video gives you a lot to think about!  Did you see the pram balanced on the edge of the river?  :o

Two photographs of Maia (G-ADHK) under construction at Rochester. Even in this partially-completed state, there's something strangely beautiful about this aircraft, like all of the late model Short flying boats.

The composite, which used to take off from the River Medway in front of Short Brothers, was handed over to the British Overseas Aircraft Corporation in June, 1938.

Ah, the local press, dontcha luv em! I presume that the intended reference was to British Overseas Airways (not Aircraft) Corporation. If so, the claim is that Short Brothers handed the Mercury/Maia composite over to BOAC some seventeen months before it was formed (on 24 November 1939) and some twenty two months before it started operating (on 1 April 1940). I believe the actual recipient to have been Imperial Airways.

Here's the model mentioned in Reply #8, on display in the Solent Sky Museum.
